These days, billboards and magazine advertisements glorifying smoking no longer peak the interest of wandering eyes and they don’t seem to be as noticeable as they had been during the 1920’s. In the days of yesteryear famous women smoking graced us with their presences on film, billboards and in popular magazines.
Although the idea of women smoking in society was deemed as being offensive at the time, cigarettes were a marketable product, which nonetheless were in vogue. We’ve all been informed of the risks and dangers that smoking presents so with this in mind, why do women smoke?
Smoking is often believed to be a social activity that many women seem to engage themselves in with little regard for the consequences. In social settings, including clubs and bar scenes it isn’t exceptional to find people having a cigarette while sipping a glass of Chardonnay.
In recent years, many restaurants and other established businesses had reached the decision to completely prohibit smoking because more and more people have become aware of the dangers associated not only with the women smoking, but to those who are plagued with having to inhale second-hand cigarette smoke.
Women seem to have more of a problem with smoking because they are now expected to work and assume their role as a wife and mother, so stress is fundamentally the reason we find more women smoking. There are those of us who feel motivated with the daily stressors we encounter, while the rest of us do not respond well to life-altering changes and events. Quite a few of women who are smokers look forward to their cigarette breaks to “take a break” from the daily conundrums they encounter in life.
Another reason we may find women smoking more than men is to attempt maintain their weight, as well as to lose weight. Society nowadays places a great deal of emphasis on how women are supposed to look and the majority of women who are slender are deemed to be the most attractive. It is a popular belief that smoking cigarettes works as an appetite suppressant because the taste buds and nasal passages over time develop impaired sensations in response to food.
There are still many more women who smoke to attempt to fill a void from the occasional sting of loneliness. While most human beings are magnanimously known for being social creatures, there are some women who are shy and may seek relief from engaging in a conversation by reaching for a cigarette.
Since quite a few of us have an aversion to cigarette smoke, smoking offers women some form of relief from social activities. For those who are really introverted, smoking may replace the need for friendship although the previous appeal to smoking is currently decreasing.
